Teeth Whitening Procedure

At-home treatment for teeth whitening consists of daily application of a bleaching gel via the use of custom-made bleaching trays.

If you come see us for this procedure, we'll first want to do an examination to make sure that none of your teeth will be damaged by the powerful bleaching gel. After the examination, we'll also give you a cleaning, so you're starting the process without any kind of buildup that could interfere with even results. If everything looks good, we'll take impressions of your teeth so that we can supply your custom-made bleaching trays, which are similar to mouthguards and fit snugly over your teeth. Finally, we send you on your way with your bleaching trays and the specially formulated bleaching gel.

The bleaching gel contains peroxide, which penetrates the surfaces of your teeth while you are using the bleaching trays. The gel oxidizes the embedded stains, and the longer you leave the gel on, the whiter and brighter your results.

Use of the bleaching gel does not damage your teeth, even after extended use.

A Word About Over-the-Counter Products

There are a plethora of products available that claim to whiten your teeth, especially whitening toothpastes. Even if whitening toothpastes have peroxide in them, they simply are not on your teeth long enough to have any effect on embedded stains, though they will help with surface stains.

Over-the-counter whitening treatments can be effective, but the solutions are weaker, so it takes longer to see results. Also, systems that involve trays are best used under the supervision of your dentist, to make sure you don't have any teeth that will be damaged (or leaky fillings), and that the gel is not irritating the soft tissues of your mouth.
