Gum disease care
in Groveport, OH.
Healthy gums are the foundation that holds your teeth in place, and we take periodontal disease seriously. At Sedalia Dental in Groveport, our scaling and root planing treatment cleans below the gumline to stop the infection. We then build a personalized plan with you to address deep gum pockets and bone loss. Our dentists also help you understand the best steps to keep your gums healthy for good.
Signs of gum disease
Gum disease is often painless early on, so it is easy to miss. Watch for gums that bleed when you brush or floss, gums that look red, swollen, or puffy, breath that stays bad no matter what you do, gums pulling away from your teeth, and teeth that feel loose or look like they are shifting. If any of that sounds familiar, come see us.
How it progresses
Gum disease starts as gingivitis, when plaque along the gumline irritates the gums. At that stage it is reversible with a professional cleaning and good home care. Left alone it can advance to periodontitis. The gums pull away from the teeth and form pockets that trap bacteria, and the bone supporting your teeth begins to break down. Catching it early is what protects your teeth.
Scaling and root planing
Scaling and root planing, often called a deep cleaning, reaches below the gumline where a regular cleaning cannot. Scaling clears the plaque and tartar packed into the gum pockets. Root planing smooths the tooth roots so bacteria have a harder time taking hold and the gums can reattach and heal. We numb the area first so you stay comfortable throughout.
Your treatment plan
Every mouth is different. We measure your gum pockets, review your dental images for signs of bone loss, and build a plan that fits you. For many patients that includes periodontal maintenance visits, which go deeper than routine cleanings and keep the infection in check. Your daily habits matter just as much, so we will show you how to clean along the gumline and talk through anything that makes gum disease harder to treat, like smoking or blood sugar. Advanced gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss, and treating it early helps you keep your natural teeth.

Questions
about gum disease.
Bleeding when you brush or floss, red or puffy gums, and bad breath that will not go away are the common early signs. Gums that pull back from your teeth or teeth that feel loose point to a more advanced stage.
The earliest stage, gingivitis, can usually be reversed with a professional cleaning and good home care. Once it advances to periodontitis the damage to bone does not grow back, but the disease can be controlled with scaling and root planing and regular maintenance visits.
We numb the area first, so most patients are comfortable during treatment. Your gums may feel tender for a few days afterward, and over the counter pain relief is usually enough.
A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar above and just below the gumline. A deep cleaning reaches further into the gum pockets and smooths the tooth roots so the gums can reattach and heal.
It depends on how much of your mouth needs treatment. Many patients finish over one or two visits, followed by maintenance visits to keep things stable. We will walk you through your plan before we start anything.
Many dental plans help cover scaling and root planing. We are in network with most major PPO plans and can check your benefits for you before treatment starts.
